Summary |
In Thomas Hardy's words, this is the story of "a deadly war waged between flesh and spirit." It tells of the short, miserable life of the promising Jude Fawley, a stonemason aspiring to the ministry, who is defeated intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally by fate, his own weakness, and his involvement in the lives of others. His failure to fulfill the opposing expectations of the two women he loves and the violent deaths of his children thwart his ideals and lead to his destruction. |
