Summary |
Bonnie Young's intrepid explorations have taken her to such exotic locales as Zanzibar, Mali, Jerusalem, the Sinai Desert, Cairo, Borneo, Papua New Guinea, Tibet, Nepal, China, Peru, Bolivia, and the Sahara. The photography she took during her many journeys as well as the handcrafted pieces she collected inspired Donna Karan's designs, which then appeared on runways around the world. |
The images in this book are organized by color and pattern, starting with black, Donna Karan's "tribal" color, which she believes represents a creative canvas, open to imagination and expression, ready to absorb color and light. As the pages unfold, the photographer reveals the blues of China, the reds from the monasteries of Tibet, the ambers of Mali, the indigo of the Saharan Tuaregs, the yellows and wine purples of the Woodabe people of Niger, and the greens and grays of Vietnam. Young has observed that the colors associated with the peoples she visited are vanishing because of the impact of modern culture, and she feels strongly that is important to see and appreciate these colors before they are modified or disappear. Accompanying the pictures are brief captions by Donna Karan and Bonnie Young that explore how these lyrical colors and patterns can be used to vitalize and soften hard-edged modern fashion. |
Lavishly designed by Trey Laird and Hans Dorsinville, Donna Karan's executive creative directors, this book will appeal to those interested in fashion, travel, design and the rich creativity of different cultures. |
