Husband & wife adventurers Martin E. Johnson & Osa Johnson undertake an "aerial safari", flying over the rainforests of British North Borneo (known today as Sabah). |
Summary |
"Between 1912 and Martin's death in a plane crash in 1937 this fearless couple hopscotched the jungles of the globe, cranking out over a dozen exotic travelogues. The Johnsons mixed animal thrills with gags, usually at the expense of the natives. Dignity be damned if it meant that a laugh could be had by giving a pigmy a cigar or a monkey a beer. Here Martin and Osa visit Borneo, encountering an ark full of exotic animals - including the proboscis monkey and a wild 300 pound orangutan - and members of Borneo tribes described as among "the laziest people on earth." There's even a comic "professor" who does a dialogue shtick as part of the narration. As always in these travelogues, we wind up learning much more about the explorers' attitudes toward indigenous people, animals, and the land than we do about the exotic locale itself. If you have a taste for jungle jitters Borneo will satisfy your appetite. Narrated by famed newscaster Lowell Thomas."--Eric Schaefer, exploitation film historian. |
