Summary Osteoarthritis (OA) affects about 21 million people in the United States. By age 65, the majority of the population has radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis and 11 percent have symptomatic OA of the knee. This is a systematic review of three treatments for OA of the knee: intra-articular injections of viscosupplements; oral glucosamine, chondroitin, or the combination; and, arthroscopic lavage and debridement. The key questions are: (1) effectiveness and harms in primary OA of the knee, (2) in secondary OA of the knee, (3) in subpopulations, and (4)comparison of the three interventions.
