"The focus of the book has been fixed on facets and issues of the Revolutionary Era which still have a compelling relevance to our own time -- the issues which impelled the colonists to secede from the Empire, the rise of anti-monarchical and republican sentiment, the growth of revolutionary organizations, and the restraints imposed upon social violence by the Revolutionary elite which directed, from beginning to end, the first successful movement of decolonization in modern times. Consideration is given as well to the ideological principles which moved the colonists toward revolution and which inspired their notions of constitutionalism, impelled them to seek limitations on governmental authority, and cautioned them to be doubly sure that civil liberties be explicitly safeguarded. Lastly, documentation is provided, at least in a suggestive way, to illuminate the egalitarian, social and cultural transformation which the American Revolution triggered." [Author]. |
