Summary The realities of shrinking fossil fuel reserves, growing global energy demand, and climate change concerns will force a change to a sustainable energy economy. To help with this transition, systems engineers will need new tools and have somewhat different roles than in the past. This paper discusses large, past projects that may provide insights to help systems engineers plan for the challenge of transitioning to a sustainable energy economy.
