"Francisco Petrarch, 1304-1374, the first great poet of the Italian Renaissance, stands at the threshold between the Middle Ages and the modern world; his fame as humanist and scholar views with his supreme achievement as an Italian lyricist. The 366 sonnets and odes, ballads, and madrigals that compose the Rime in Vita e Morte di Madonna Laura, or Canzoniere, are perhaps the greatest love poems ever written. They were inspired by Petrarch's life-long passion for a lady--his beautiful, ethereal Laura--whom he saw for the first time when he was in his early twenties and whom he mourned after her death. Though the theme of these poems is hopeless love, they are vigorous, profound, full of desire and conflict, grief and consolation. Petrarch was an innovator in the poetry of human consciousness, striving to understand his own individuality through continouous self-analysis and self-portrayal. He attains a miraculous union of direct speech, music, and personal feeling by joining strict metrical precision with a spontaneous freedom of accent.
