"The play is based on a contemporary narrative, first put forth in a pamphlet entitled 'Newes from Perin in Cornwall' and afterwards retold in Frankland's 'Annals,' 1681, but more probably first known to Lillo through the medium of an old ballad, of a murder which had actually taken place at Bohelland Farm, near Penryn, in September 1618." - Dictionary of national biography.
