Current political, social, scientific, education and literary news was written about by many famous authors, and reform movements in particular were treated extensively ... Isaac Leopold Rice provided financial backing for many years, first for Lorettus Sutton Metcalf as editor. Metcalf exercised extreme editorial control but set the tone for later years by publishing symposia and debates on controversial issues. He was succeeded after five years by Walter Hines Page who also published famous authors. |
