Anton Roman founded the Overland monthly with one eye on promoting California and the other on offering western writers a medium for their work. By far, the most prosperous volumes belong to the early years when Francis Bret Harte was an editor and contributor. His first tale published in the second number and entitled "The luck of Roaring Camp" brought instant acclaim from the East. For two years, until 1870, Harte's active editing and occasional pieces made Overland a smash success. When Harte resigned to take a post back East, the magazine promptly retrogressed, losing money for its new proprietor, John H. Carmany. After struggling for five years, the monthly was suspended in 1875. Readers will find this first series affords a valuable insight into California history--in particular, its Indians, gold mining, and Chinese population. |
