In 'To the reader' (first appearing in the author's 'Four new plays,' 1665) Howard states his opposition to the use of rhyme in dramatic verse. Dryden, who "had contended that rhyme is more suitable than blank verse for dramatic purposes,... replied in the 'Essay of dramatic poesy,' 1668; Howard retorted ... in the preface to his 'Great favourite; or the duke of Lerma." - Dictionary of national biography.
Each play with special title-page, dated 1692.
The first four plays first collected in Four new plays ... 1665; Five new plays first published 1692.
The Indian queen is partly by John Dryden, brother-in-law of Howard.
