Summary |
Integrating large amounts of variable renewable energy such as wind or solar into an electrical grid is challenging because of the variability of the power output. Previous "wind integration" studies have been performed over the last several years to examine the technical aspects of integrating large amounts of wind power into the bulk electrical grids in the United States and Europe. The methodologies and lessons learned from these studies were applied to the Oahu grid, which is even more challenging because it has a significantly smaller load. This study, the Oahu Wind Integration and Transmission Study (OWITS), was composed of several smaller studies and was sponsored jointly by the Hawaiian Electric Company, the state of Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism (DBEDT), and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). |
