Summary In May 2007, the town of Greensburg, Kansas, was struck by a large tornado that destroyed more than 90% of the buildings and infrastructure of the town. After this devastating event, the citizens of Greensburg decided to rebuild their town in a green manner, incorporating the most efficient energy technologies possible in the reconstruction effort. The U.S. Department of Energy, through the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), has been providing technical assistance to Greensburg to help facilitate the various efforts. As part of this support, NREL conducted an assessment of potential opportunities to develop a biomass pelletization or briquetting plant in the region.
