Approximately 8,000 bites by venomous snakes occur yearly. The neighboring states of Arkansas and Oklahoma rank among the states with the highest incidence of reported venomous snakebites. In S. E. Kansas, snakes emerge from hibernation late in spring and reenter in mid-fall.
