In 'To the reader' (first appearing in the author's 'Four new plays,' 1665) Howard states his opposition to the use of rhyme in dramatic verse. Dryden, who "had contended that rhyme is more suitable than blank verse for dramatic purposes,... replied in the 'Essay of dramatic poesy,' 1668; Howard retorted ... in the preface to his 'Great favourite; or the duke of Lerma." - Dictionary of national biography.
