Examines the "Jewish question" in Hungary from the aspect of political history of ideas, from the 18th century to the present. Describes polemics by politicians, literary personalities, historians, and thinkers, quoting extensively from their writings. Pp. 25-208 present a historical background. Deals with conservative and liberal attitudes concerning the immigration and the assimilation of Jews. Describes the extreme-right movements from Istczy to `Szlasi. Devotes special attention to the Horthy era. Examines the "urbanist-folkist" debate from the beginning of the 20th century through the new generation of urbanists in the 1920s-30s, pointing out that the "folkists" provided the ideology for the antisemitic policies of the Horthy era.
